Dr. Stewart is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine. Sports medicine is a specialty within orthopaedic surgery that treats injuries to bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and muscles. Many of these injuries are sustained during athletic activity, but not all people who experience these injuries are competitive athletes. Dr. Stewart treats all athletes - from little league to pros, from weekend warriors to high school and collegiate athletes. Whether you are a non-athlete or a recreational, student or professional athlete, you can expect to receive the same level of expert care from Dr. Stewart.
Practice Philosophy:
Dr. Stewart emphasizes personalized care, because he understands that the treatment that may make sense for a college or professional athlete may be different than that for a young child or a weekend warrior. Many injuries can be treated without surgery, and in many cases, this is preferable. Dr. Stewart's extensive training allows him to help develop a plan of treatment, either surgical or non surgical, that is most appropriate for each individual given the unique goals, needs, and desires of each person.
If surgery is required, Dr. Stewart has the experience and training that you can trust to give you the best chance to make a complete recovery. He specializes in minimally invasive techniques and arthroscopy to deal with complex injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. Dr. Stewart has extensive experience dealing with high school, college, and professional athletes. During his fellowship at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, athletes from all over North America came to seek the advice and treatment of many of the doctors with whom Dr. Stewart trained. Dr. Stewart was an assistant physician for the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team, which included accompanying the team to Florida for spring training. In addition to the Astros, Dr. Stewart assisted with the Houston Texans NFL football team, the Houston Dynamo Major League Soccer team, the University of Houston athletic teams, and several Houston area high school football teams.
Prior to specializing in sports medicine in fellowship, Dr. Stewart had extensive experience during residency at the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago. While in residency, Dr. Stewart trained with the team doctors for the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Fire, and Northwestern University athletic teams. He personally was involved in numerous sports medicine activites including coverage of the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, the NBA pre-draft camp, and the Joffrey Ballet. In addition, he performed athletic physicals and football game physician coverage for the Chicago Public Schools. Since coming to Holland, Dr. Stewart has become heavily involved in treating athletes at Hope College, as well as the area high schools and has a close working relationship with all of the area athletic trainers. This allows for coordinated care of the athletes that he treats. You can frequently find Dr. Stewart on the sidelines of many area athletic events volunteering his time to help care for athletes. In addition to his training taking care of athletes, Dr. Stewart's experience in residency has given him broad training to treat many common orthopaedic problems, ranging from pediatric injuries to fractures and other injuries of the musculoskeletal system.
