Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerves that control them. At Shoreline Orthopaedics, our experts use EMG to help identify nerve and muscle conditions that affect mobility, sensation, and strength, particularly when symptoms involve the back, neck, spine, or extremities.
What Does EMG Do?
EMG testing helps pinpoint the source of symptoms such as:
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness or cramping
- Radiating pain in the arms or legs
- Spinal nerve compression
- Suspected pinched nerves or nerve damage
Our experts measure the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during movement and use EMG to provide valuable insight into how well nerves are functioning. It is commonly used in conjunction with nerve conduction studies (NCS) to evaluate a variety of orthopaedic and neuromuscular conditions.
